Topeka Google April Fool - Google Name Change. Google has changed its name, for one day at least, to Topeka, It's all part of an April Fools' Day prank by Google. a move intended to honor the city in Kansas that recently changed its name to Google for one month in hopes of being selected as a one of the cities to receive a new, ultrafast fiber-optic network.

The April Fools' Day prank has become an annual tradition of the Mountain View search giant, which has previously promised its users the ability to predate e-mails and obtain free high-speed Internet through their home plumbing.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt blogged about the name change today on the company's Web site.

"We didn't reach this decision lightly; after all, we had a fair amount of brand equity tied up in our old name," Schmidt wrote. "But the more we surfed around (the former) Topeka's municipal Web site, the more kinship we felt with this fine city at the edge of the Great Plains."
